Know Your Opponents
In Texas Holdem poker, knowing yout opponents is the key... and remember that is exactly what they are... opponents. Often, in Texas Holdem, you will see people chatting with each other cordially or even striking up "table friendships", as I like to call them. In my opinion, this is one of the worst things that you can do, especially in a real casino. Because you are physically sitting next to them, things are going good, your in a good mood, you start opening up and making friends, bad idea...
You start talking about how you play Texas Holdem, how you would have played that hand, shooting the breeze, allowing the other guy to build a profile on how you play Texas Holdem, without paying to see your cards. You take it easy on a guy when you should be looking to extract as much as you can. A lot of you out there know exactly what I'm talking about and trust me when I started playing Texas Holdem poker, I did the same thing.
For all you new Texas Holdem players out there, that are playing for real money, this an important point to keep in mind. If you're playing Texas Holdem the correct way, your opportunities are few and far between and you have to make the most of them.
One of the nice things about playing texas Holdem online, you are far less susceptible to getting distracted by other players, allowing you to focus on your game and what you are doing.

Often when playing single table sit and go's, especially the high end tables you often play against many of the same players. It's very important that you start to build a profile on your opponents because this is probably the most valuable thing you can bring to the table. Most online Texas Holdem sites will allow you to open up an online notebook and jot down nuggets of information you find valuable. Or, like me you can get an old fashioned black and white marble notebook, throw in a few colored tabs and start building player profiles.
You have such an advantage when you're playing in a $100 single table Texas Holdem buy-in and you have a half page of notes on 4 of the 9 players. Who will raise in early position with a small pair, who will play Ace blank, who will call an all-in bet with AQ, who will call an all-in bet or bet on a flush or open ended straight draw. Knowing players tendencies gives you a tremendous advantage in Texas Holdem poker. What often distinguishes a great holdem player from a good holdem player is their database of useful information on other players and how quickly they are able to discern it.
