Is it safe to play Texas Holdem online?
I think it's very safe to play Texas Holdem online. I think many years ago it was a lot easier to collude then it is today. But today online Texas Holdem is big business, online poker sites have a lot to lose and will crackdown very quickly if their players are behaving inappropriately. Often, they have state of the art encryption and server technology to review any suspicious behavior and will impose stiff penalties on players thought to be colluding. Because the online Texas Holdem community is self-policing I personally think it's a lot safer then any form of live poker where players can collude, bring devices to a table, misdeal or even miss the winning hand. Why should I play the same starting hand differently, if I am first to act, then when I am on the (dealer) button?
Your position at the poker table plays a big part in your decision making process. If you are dealt A10 unsuited, under the gun (first after the blind) in a 9 player ring game, you probably should fold. If you are dealt the same hand and are the first into the pot from late position this becomes a raising hand. The cards are the same, only your position has changed. To learn a lot more read this section on starting hands.
What is the difference between playing Texas Holdem in a casino versus online?
This used to be a hotly contested topic, since players fell into one category or the other. But today, with the growth and acceptance of online Texas Holdem, many casino based players now play online, as well. And many of the newbie's that are picking up the game for the first time only play online, given the convenience. Click on Casino vs. Online to learn more.
What's the difference between pot odds versus implied odds?
I think it's better to show an example
first, rather than define it. Let's say you're
on a draw, or need a card to complete your
hand. For example, you have 2 hearts
(A
7
) and the flop comes
(9
4
K
). There is $400 in the pot and
it's going to cost you $40 to call. Well, it
certainly makes sense to call since the 'pot'
is giving you 10 to 1 'odds' on your money. You
are getting the correct pot odds to make this
call. In essence, the odds you
get from the money in the pot versus how
much it's going to cost you to call.
Implied odds are the assumed odds you are getting from the pot, based on how much you think your opponent(s) are going to invest in the pot, when all is said and done.
